Grain Free: A New Beginning…

My “new beginning” started January, 3rd (2018), when I went grain free. To some, it may sound like no big deal, but for me, it has been life-altering. Once I got through my detox phase I saw things so much clearer.

And I did go through detox. I was overly tired and felt achy and sore as if I had the flu. My skin would all of a sudden produce a pimple and I won’t even go into my digestion changes. My partner in crime, Raquel, struggled a little more than me. I believe that is because she was going gluten free for the first time. I was already gluten-free.  The good news is that we both felt those 7 days of discomfort were worth it.

So now we have mastered the grains, what is next? Minerals!

As I discussed in a previous blog, our soil is severely depleted of minerals and our bodies need minerals to function. And if we aren’t getting the minerals in our food, then we need to supplement with them daily. Our bodies function at their best with a minimum of 60 minerals each day.

If you were to ask me to pick my favorite mineral, and yes I have one, it is Selenium.

“recent studies have shown that Selenium is vital for, “reducing and preventing the incidence of cancer initiated by a variety of carcinogens, including chemicals and radiation.”

Selenium is a powerhouse trace mineral. According to the NIH (National Institutes of Health),”Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element, and its low status in humans has been linked to increased risk of various diseases, such as cancer and heart disease.” The NIH further states that recent studies have shown that Selenium is vital for, “reducing and preventing the incidence of cancer initiated by a variety of carcinogens, including chemicals and radiation.”  (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2698273/)

Auto-immune Thyroiditis, or more commonly known as Hashimoto’s, occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the body’s own cells and organs. Symptoms of Hashimoto’s are the following: fatigue and sluggishness; increased sensitivity to cold; constipation; pale, dry skin; puffy face; brittle nails; hair loss; enlargement of the tongue;

unexplained weight gain; muscle aches, tenderness, and stiffness; joint pain and stiffness; muscle weakness; excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding; depression; and memory lapses. The NIH further states that ” In the thyroid, selenium is required for the antioxidant function and for the metabolism of thyroid hormones.” (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5307254/)

So if you are concerned about cancer, heart health, and thyroid health, look into supplementing with Selenium. But buyer beware, not all supplements are the same. You need to buy from a third party verified company. If you need help finding a good quality Selenium source, please contact me and I can help.

Now go take your Selenium!
