Good Health: It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint

To reach whatever health goals we desire, it will not happen overnight. Whether it is you want to lose weight or improve your health, it will be a slow and steady pace. I remind myself daily that I did not get this way in a few days. It was decades of poor food choices, stress, and not making my health a priority.

I know it may be rough. Like anything, when our bodies are addicted to something it revolts to let us know that “it” is not happy when we remove that item from our diet. And how does it show us “it” is not happy? You may feel as if you have the flu with aches and pains, headaches, fatigue, diarrhea and overall a “yucky” feeling for 5-7 days.

On the positive, once grain free and out of the detox phase, you can experience the following benefits: reduced pain and stiffness; reduced muscle aches; reduced fatigue; improved energy; enhanced mental clarity (less brain fog); reduced gastrointestinal symptoms; improved bowel function; less headaches; and loss of weight.

Still wondering if it is worth it? Well, let’s talk about our gut.

Eating grains irritates and causes inflammation of the gut, which then leads to intestinal permeability. Grains are difficult to digest and can alter the ratio of good bacteria in the gut. Many who have a history of eating grains, also suffer from a full spectrum of gastrointestinal issues, known and unknown, as a result of having a “leaky gut”. Some symptoms related to a leaky gut are heartburn, stomach pain, gas, constipation and or diarrhea.  Over time, having a  “leaky gut” can allow chemicals and toxins to have access to our bloodstream, resulting in immune abnormalities, increased food allergies, autoimmune pain, and malnutrition.

I grew up with horses and I would see malnourished horses eat wooden fences. Why? Because their diet was not supplying them with the nutrition they needed so they ate anything. And I mean anything.

Yes, in 2018 many are malnourished. Especially the obese.

If our bodies do not get the needed daily nutrients it needs to function at its best, it will crave anything in an attempt to get that nutrition. An example of this is when someone is chronically hungry. They eat chips, junk food, anything lying around and in 2  hours they are still hungry. Their body is “starving” for nutrition.  I grew up with horses and I would see malnourished horses eat wooden fences. Why? Because their diet was not supplying them with the nutrition they needed so they ate anything. And I mean anything.

And the trouble is, our nutrition is not what it used to be.

Our soil is void of minerals resulting in our food being void of nutrition.  The combination results in us eating food that is not supplying our bodies with the nutrients it needs to handle illness, stress and the toxins we unknowingly are exposed to daily.

So, what can we do? The first step is to stop eating grains which will allow our bodies to heal and stop the “leaky gut” cycle. It is an investment in your health that you will never regret.

Slow and steady wins the race.  Now let’s start that marathon!
